Mites are small parasites that infest the skin of the animal and can penetrate into different layers of the skin. How does a mycosis develop on the horse's skin?

Mycosis of the skin can have very different causes. It often occurs in horses in the digestive tract or animals infect one another. Fungi survive very well in many places in the barn, as in cleaning tools and are thus unknowingly transmitted from one animal to another. Fungi proliferate particularly well in autumn and winter. By itself, the infection is caused by fungal spores, which often survive for months or years. Often the course of the disease is delayed - the symptoms do not always appear immediately. A first characteristic of a fungal infection in the horse are small swellings of the skin that lead to dandruff. The animal's hair in these areas falls in locks. Sometimes itching also comes, but not necessarily always.

How does a mite infestation affect the horse?

The mites feel very at ease even during the autumn and winter months and remain lurking everywhere in the surrounding greenery during horse riding. The insidious thing about a mite infestation is that these parasites can penetrate deep into the skin and thus trigger further diseases such as mud fever and weaken the horse's immune system without been immediately recognized as the real cause. Since mites are very robust and stubborn, they can also settle in the barn despite intensive cleaning and from there spread to the animals. The symptoms of a mite infestation in horses are relatively unique. The animal often paws with hooves, taking advantage of every opportunity to rub against objects, fences or land. As a result, crusts or nodules form on the skin, hair loss and inflammation occur.

Why are fungi and mites often so stubborn and difficult to be treated in horses?

In most care products, the problem lies in the type of application. An active ingredient is applied to the affected skin which is swept away very quickly. If the horse rolls over the pasture or rubs along the fence, the ointment is removed and can no longer function.
